On Thursday, October 2, 2025, the training course entitled “Operation and Maintenance of Water Desalination Plants and Addressing Their Specific Challenges” concluded at the Regional Office of the Organization in Cairo. The course was held from September 29 to October 2, 2025, with the participation of representatives from Misurata Free Zone, State of Libya.
The course was delivered by Chemist/ Mohamed Moussa Abdel Moneim Moussa – Consultant at Desal Technology for Water Treatment and Lecturer at the Water Technology Experts Forum.
Over four days, the program covered a wide range of key topics, including:
- Principles of water desalination using reverse osmosis and its stages.
- Types and classifications of water.
- Main feed water problems affecting desalination performance.
- Primary water treatment processes and components (sedimentation tanks, multi-media filters, cartridge filters).
- Evaluation methods for primary treatment, problem identification, and solutions.
- Calculation of primary treatment capacity and its suitability for desalination units.
- Salt separation stage, components, and influencing factors.
- Desalination membranes, their components, and potential damages.
- Types of pumps, capacity determination, and protection methods.
- Energy recovery and saving units.
- Troubleshooting desalination units and corrective maintenance.
- Measuring instruments and tests related to desalination membranes.
- Causes of membrane fouling and scaling, and prevention methods.
- Chemicals used in desalination processes and related calculations.
- Chemical cleaning units and procedures.
- Environmentally sound methods for safe disposal of reject water.
- Use of specialized desalination software.
- Preventive maintenance, safety, and occupational health related to desalination units.
The course also featured practical applications, field exercises, and case studies, enriching participants’ technical and applied knowledge.
